Viva la Vida into The Vivacious Bensoul Experience
Benson Mutua Muia, better known as Bensoul, was born
on March 4, 1996 in the slums of Dallas, Embu County. On account of where he
was born and raised, Bensoul was served an unfair share of struggles. His
father left the young family owing to the refusal by his mother to convert them
to Islam.
He interacted with music from a very tender age, as
his father was also a musician and instrumentalist who associated himself with
certain choirs. Ironically, his father tried to bend him away from the craft
but Bensoul could not do away with this part of him that had already taken
root.
The talented musician has mentioned that his early
church life contributed a whole lot to the person he has become, saying,
“I would leave school and go to Full Gospel Churches of Kenya and sit next to
the guitarist or the pianist and observe which cord he played the most and
asked if I could try.”
The Technical University of Kenya (TUK) drop-out has
donned several hats from the music collection including that of a singer,
songwriter, and music producer. He has additionally penned songs for
significant artists from East Africa and the larger African continent.
Bensoul’s massive yearn for the tunes has occasioned
his way with quite a few instruments including acoustic guitar, bass guitar,
piano, cello, violin, double bass, drums, and ukulele among others.
His greatness has also put him on the global map, as
he, alongside Sauti
Sol
were named the best songwriter and producer respectively for Burna Boy’s “Twice
As Tall” Album, in the 2021 Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony.
Attending Sauti Academy also fast-tracked his chances
of being signed with Sol Generation. The multi-instrumentalist pays homage to
his enthusiasm, curiosity in learning new things, and relations with music
experts such as H_Art The Band and Sauti Sol.
Consequently, music pioneers respect and love him.
Savara, a singer from the famed Sauti Sol band, voiced his admiration for
Bensoul, stating,
“Bensoul is the king of love songs. He can play the keys, he can play the
guitar, and he can compose a song. That’s a man armed to the tooth.”
The Grammy Award-winning songwriter has beautified his
catalogue with sensational singles, Extended Plays (EPs) namely; “Unaware”,
“Medicine”, and “Qwarantunes”, and two albums namely; “Lion
of Sudah” (2023) and “The
Party and The After Party” (2024).
The crooner’s elevation up the musical ladder, has
been illuminated in his sophomore album which was released on July 26, 2024. He
has blended his soulful vocals with significant collaborations, soothing the
souls of both local and international fans.
